Count the Balls

Lately I’ve been putting a lot of hours into Blending and was in dire need of a break. I saw a picture like this in a magazine when I was in college and decided to give it a try. If I remember correctly the image was ray-traced and took 3 weeks on a super-computer to render. That’s a whole lot of number crunching. (I guess it also gives a hint as to how long ago I was in college doesn’t it?)

How many balls are in this image???

Twenty-four? Hehe, that is a very nicely done bit, well presented. Isn’t it wonderful how old super-computers are now outclassed by desktops in our homes? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m guessing 6.

Nicely done, can’t wait to find out how many there are

Yeah, there are only six balls in there. You can actually see a slightly difference in the reflection:

I think 48, if you havent used any tricks

lol im laughing

:clapping: lol great job! Nice concept and great render!

I’m glad you all enjoyed this. It was fun to do. There are 6 balls and three mirrors. (Yoeri; does that count as a trick?) The screen shot shows the setup. When the original image was first done way back in the dark ages the mirrors were put in to make it more complicated. It was a real test of the computer and the programmers.

I am also including two other shots of this same setup:

The blue one has only the mirrors, balls, camera and one lamp. The blue of course is the Blender generic render background. It completely colors the mirrors and adds a greenish light on the balls.

The gray one has an emitting plane added. (See the side view in the screen shot. The diagonal line is the plane.)

The one I first showed has two light sources, the lamp and the plane.

Thanks for all your comments guys.
