Crayon /Charcol media test

Hi all just posting this here to get feedback on how stuffs looking.
Im doing my honours project at Abertay Uni.
Its about making game art look more traditional art.
Heres a post with me testing to make crayon and charcoal look.
This is just lifted from my blog found here:

Any comments or questions welcome.
If your interested please follow my blog as il be updating very regularly.

For this test im taking some advice from the lecturers at my pitch and working on one of my own characters. This is a character i came up with a few years ago on the way back from collage on the bus.

I don’t have the original sketches but i did some new ones in Crayon:

I also wanted to do the charcoal images as i though it may better sute the nature of a mucky train face boy.

I made the mesh rigged it and animated it back then so thought i could just add textures to look like Crayon/Charcoal.

I remade the UVs as i have gotten better at UV mapping since then.

New UVs

I then printed the UVs out and coloured in the areas using crayon and charcoal.

This was done twice to have 2 images to flick between to add the more sketchy hand drawn feeling like in limited hand drawn animations.

Scanned them in and touched them up in Photoshop to match up and colour correct.

2 Charcoal versions of uv

Next step was to make the outline. I did this in the same way as the knight example.Duplicate the mesh, scale along normals, inverse normals so faces are pointing inwards, apply outline image made from a segment from the hand drawn uv map.
The charcoal map worked a lot better in this test.

Then a displacement modifier was added to the mesh with a cloud image generated in blender. One thing i did differently from the knight test was i used a different cloud map on the second outline creating more edge variation instead of just a double border.
This is the crayon with the crayon outline x2it looks soft and like crayon drawing. the texture also animates.http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aBsqwW7Nrp0/UKK01SDCT3I/AAAAAAAAAvs/07jQBwY6W3U/s320/crayon1.png
In this on its crayon again but this time i expanded the mesh and used the same texture with a slight colour change to darken the values to make a context aware outline, ie the yellow arms have slightly darker outlines. The brown in this seems too harsh when compared to the first image.

This image shows the first of the 2 charcoal tests, this one has an animated texture and animated outline, the dynamic changing in outline works will with the overlay of the 2 outlines and creates definite dark areas.

This one is charcoal again but i applied the displacement modifiers which means it dose not wobble like the other examples. the way the displacement applied was different to the way it was previewed which was a little annoying as i didn’t get the sharp contrast and strength in dark ranges as in the first charcoal test. but in action it looks more peaceful than the above test.Charcoal may do with a slightly cooler paper colour.

Heres the video of it in action:

Will hopefully work more on this test in the near future. Mabie a small environment to see how each effect looks in context to the characters.
This test was a success and i really like the first crayon test and both of the charcoal tests they all have there uses in a game weather its having a non wobbly outline at a slow paced part of a game and a crazy wobbly outline when the pace picks up.

I love the texture and the model especially the texture animation, keep it up

I thought for sure this wasn’t for the BGE, but just as a basic rendering test, but the video showed it was in the BGE. Very nice effect. So, are you swapping out the meshes, with one that’s displaced?

Thanks its nice that u thought it was a render test :), No theres 3 meshes, 1 is the main color, and there are 2 used for outlines. The displacemtn when it is on an animated mesh flickers about and if you combie it with another and some alpha you get effects like this.

Greatly done! :}

wow I love the style!! That’s a really nice result! Bring it on!

What is everyone’s favarate one ? I cant decide what one I like the best.

I think I like the crayon one more because it’s colorful. The charcoal version also looks pretty sweet, though.

You could make a black&white Parallel World or several Instances of your Game where all the Color is sucked out for some Reason, then you could use both Versions.

Is it possible in the BGE to do texture unvaling ? like in deblob http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3p64V5PO_M or american mcgees grmm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5_65697SmY ? I know that lit areas can act this way with nodes but can it work with a blakc and white texture that gets drawn on in real time ?

Fantastic visual effects! I really like this style (:

This is really cool.

Gotta track this gem.

kool stuff, the textures gives it a special look for the characters, it looks like animated textures hehehe keep it up!

Wow… Now that’s thinking outside the box. My mind is still trying to accept that it was in the BGE. I definitely need to start stalk your blog.
It just raised so many questions… As soon as my brain calms down from the shock, I’ll start to pick apart your steps to get a better understanding of how it works (the 3rd step of inverting the faces for instance).

As for the question of which one is the best, I’d say they are equally groovy and it would be cool to switch between them for some effect (like going from night time to day time, or a health type deal in a game)… But I guess train face 1 and 3 fool you a bit more by having the animated charcoal effect to it.
Thanks for sharing…
