I recently started out with Blender following a tutorial. But now I’m stuck on a part in the tutorial, I am modeling a toy wolf with Photo Assistance. I already made the basic shape of the wolf but I don’t know how I will be able to continue on the tail.
This is the wolf model I currently have: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Image:Wolftut3.png
and this is how it should be looking afterwards: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Image:Wolftut4.png
Should I just extract the vertices to create a rough tail and delete some of the vertices?
Wow, what a mess. In the first place, when using reference photos, you should be in wire frame drawing mode, so you can actually see the photos. Also, for a project like this, face select is not all that suitable, you need to be able to move individual vertices around. Thirdly, you want to ignore the projections (legs, ears) until the main part of the torso, head and tail have taken shape.
Take a look at these: maybe they will make more sense.
This is the basic cube, extruded to the nose and tail of the model. Some extrusions were scaled down, some were rotated slightly to get the next extrusion heading in the proper direction.
The next step is to select the vertices and move them to the profile of the model, in top and front view (the “front view” of this toy is the toy seen from the side.)
Next I’d make a longitudinal loop cut along the wolf mesh’s side, and probably a double loop cut along the back (and belly) to get more vertices to move so the torso takes on a rounder shape. Once that was done, I’d look for a face to extrude for the beginning of the front leg and another for the back leg. Since this toy’s legs are assymetrical, you might not want to mirror it. When working on the legs on the other side of the model, hide the near side. (or make a flipped version of the top and side view photos, and load them instead.)
