Create mesh out of cloth / softbody?

Hi all,

is there any way to create a mesh from a softbody and or cloth simulation?
I have a simple plane as cloth falling onto a cube.
The resulting deformed plane I want to convert into a mesh for further modeling.
How can I create a mesh from the plane from a certain frame?

By the way, can someone explain to me what is ‘baking’ for?


“Apply” the soft body or cloth modifier.
This will copy the shape to the mesh and remove the modifier.

“Baking” is storing the results of rather lengthy calculations to memory or disk, so the system does not have to do it while playing or rendering the animation.
