Create realistic single-led light in a array? With photo reference

Hello everyone,

i would like to recreate my lighting from a photo. The lens flair star with a white highlight in the middle is the key point I think, that would make it realistic. Here is my photo vs rendering:

How would I archive this?? How can i create these lens flair stars?

Ignore the rest of the textures… they are not final

Since they are “done” within the lense and you do not see this in real life… with postprocessing.

Look up glare (or flare) light… or..

In the compositor there’s a Glare node.If you set it to Streaks you get the “stars” effect.

Crank up the emission of your LEDs so they become bright, and play with the settings in the Glare node. E.g. the Threshold setting determines what brightness a pixel needs to have to get the lens flare effect.

This looks nice! I will give it a try. Thanks!

If the width of the glare bothers you, as in, it’s trying to encompass “all” of the LED surface, you can try to use a portion of the LED surface and pass it on as an AOV. This AOV is then used in comp to mask what parts of the image it considered. I use it to mimic very narrow diffraction spikes for light sources that are technically bigger. Not sure it’s realistic, but I think it looks better.
