Created edges stay visible even in object mode

image

I sculpted a head but didn’t have enough edges in the eyes to get the detail I wanted.

The easiest way I thought I could get around this was to draw new edges
to do this I shift clicked two vertices then pressed F.

But after a bit of work I realized I don’t think they’re even affecting the mesh at all

please help me out. Am I missing an “apply” button or doing this the wrong way or what?

It looks like you’re only creating vertices and edges, but neglecting to fill those vertices together to create some faces (polygons).

Example of unfilled vertices / edges with no face (polygon):

Filled vertices / edges with a face (polygon):

As you’ve mentioned, you did use the F hotkey to create new edges from vertices, however you need to select at least 3 vertices to be able to create a face (polygon). I’m guessing you neglected to do so and rather only filled 1-2 vertices at a time.

Additional info: Blender does produce “pure” edges if two vertices are selected and F is pressed even if this vertices are part of the same polygon. Some other apps do cut the polygon in two. (If you want this then you have to use the knife tool but have to pay attention for correct snapping (the vertices)).

Blender does it as well if you select two vertices (not of the same edge) and press J

Use j for this case it creates an edge in the face. Also creates joining vertices if you select vertices from different faces.
