Creating a particle not working as tut says? x axis?

Im following: http://gameblender.wikia.com/wiki/Particlebasic
It asks that your plane looks like this:

http://images.wikia.com/gameblender/images/f/f4/Tut_part_basic_01.png

I followed the tut regarding ctrl a and alt r to get it correctily one the axis. When I ran it, I got a blue screen.

I played with the plane and moved it to look like the above. Ran it again and I see a thin line shoot up and out of view.
Then I picked the cat up from the vets, and tried again.

This time I matched my view to his, the front view, and inserted the plane etc. When I ran it, only a blue screen. So i moved the plane about and nothing.

So then I rotated the plane around so I could see the back side and ran it. I saw a nice particle dart off the screen.

In the tut it just shows it still, and we go on to another step.

Can someone explain or point me to a tut regarding the fact this must be on the x axis. (required for halo mode).

Also, why do I have to have it faced away from me to see it in GE? It doesnt make any sense to me.
Thanks for helping

either the plane has an ipo and is moving, or the camera has an ipo and is moving. or when you say “ran it” do you mean you pressed P for Play? if so, then physics probably took over, that nasty little nuisance we call gravity, and sent your pretty plane straight to…er…downward toward infinity. Let your cat ponder that one. right now, mine INSISTS on laying on my arm, so i cannot type anymore.

Sweet kitties, mine lays across my lap where the keyboard goes. Him, keyboard,… him, keyboard. He usually wins that argument.
Yes, when I say ran it I mean play, and it does have a dloc set on the z axis to .50, so that explains the movement, even though in the tut, its supposed to stay still.

But why does the plane have to be backward to view it??? huh, huh? why? Blink blink.

Is it a weird thing?

And why does it have to be on the x axis?

Thank you .

OHOHOH, I got it to work like in the tut, but it is different, way different… The one I was playing with last night didn’t work today? wth?

So I used the one before and played with it, flipping that plane every which way on that axis…and boom, there it was.

But look and the difference between it and the pic from the tut above with regards to the plane and the axes.

OK, whats going on here. I went back to the saved file to get a pic with the big hand arrow pointers thingy turnd on and it doesnt work now?

Whats up with that? Just like the other one I did last night, today it doesnt work from the saved file?

i would answer your questions but I got a buffer overflow. maybe we should get you your own forum… You remind me so much of my friend and her stream of consciousness dialog…

Isn’t blender fun? Different is good. And save often and with love.

LOL, I did… that’s why its so wierd…well I need to stop procrastinating and finsh the fence.

And much later in the day… hmmm buffer overflow…working.

ititrx,

the reason is that the GE will rotate the object to the camera. The camera will see the object as you would see it if you look along the X-Axis. The rotation is based on the objects local axis (edit mode). You can rotate or move the particle to whatever you want as long it is in object mode.

I will add a comment to the tutorial to make this clear.

I hope this helps

I needed to enable Twoside to get it working.
Regarding to the flames tutorial I didn’t understand how to set the ipo’s .
Any tip’s?

If you need two side, the face is showing into the wrong direction. You can fix this by going into edit mode and rotate the face that the normal (front of the face) pointing along -X. As I said in the article above, rotating in object mode will not change the direction of the face.

IPO’s are defined in the IPO window. Select a curve type on the right hand side then you can create a key with <ctrl> + <left mouse>. Alternative you can create keys within 3D view by pressing <i> and selecting the appropriate curve type. For colors you can do this in the butttons window for materials.

IPO curves also have an edit mode <tab>. In edit mode you can change the keys of a curve. Please note that there is a menu where you can change the type of curve and type of points.

I hope this helps

Monster:

Thanks so much for explaining about the x axis. I couldnt find any info anywhere I looked.

The camera, the camera. Im just learning about the camera now.

Also, if you are still following, my flame is just the round spot and disappears quickly. It is not the beautiful flame you have in the pics?

Thanks for making those tuts, they are easy to follow.

I think you started the GE with the layer visible where the particle resides (layer 2). It is important that the particle is on an invisible layer. If you follow the tutorial you should switch to layer 1 and hide layer 2. Just press <1>.
It is also important to be in perspective view (Camera or <num 5>). Otherwise the halo face cannot be alligned to the screen.

You are right such infos are not easy to find.

Edit:
There is onother possibility: Make sure the always sensor of the emiter has true pulse. Otherwise it will create just on particle.

Gasp, OMG, that is so cool. I had layer 2 showing.

My colors are yellow to white, so my ipo’s are off, but hey I have a flame!!!

Thank you.

If you have time can you explain further:

Otherwise the halo face cannot be alligned to the screen.
