Hi all…
I would like to create a sanddune in blender (you know… the ones you see on discovery)… Does anyone know where I should start?
I’ve tried a plane and proportional editing but I can’t get it to be smooth enough …
Thanks…

make a grayscale image to be used as a displacement map, with lighter tones as the high parts, and then load it onto a grid ( be sure to select all verts of the grid, and click ‘flip normals’, or simply flip it over since by default the normals are facing down for the grid ( weird i know ) then load the grayscale image as a texture onto the grid, and hit the noise button a couple of times in edit mode. if you want the curvatures to be ultra smooth, just apply a heavy blur to your image in a paint program.
<edit> oh, and don’t forget to subsurface and ‘set smooth’ for ultra smoothness.
I’ve loaded the image and put it as a diplacement map on the grid but it doesn’t seem to get almost any height!
I see the shape of the displacement map only as ‘noise’…
Any idea what I’m doing wrong ?
well, you can try increasing the resolution of your grid to 100X100, and you can hit noise repeatedly to get the desired elevation.
yeah: you forgot to render your pic! In fact, the results of displacement maps is only visible on the render, not in the meshes seen in the 3d views! If you still don’t have any result in the render (or little), then use the Disp slider to get more results.
Hope this helps,

actually i was suggesting using the ‘noise’ button to create actual mesh distortions. displacement in the texture/materials buttons is different. you only see it in the render. noise button actually distorts your mesh along the Y axis.
