Creating "Fonts" From Meshes

I am working on a Blender animation designed to imitate the look of vector arcade games, and I’m looking for a way to save time on the text. I created meshes for all the letters and numbers I need, but to put together phrases, I have to copy, paste and position each letter individually, which will take a while, given how much text will be in the final product.

I was wondering if there was some way within Blender to use these meshes as a sort of font where I could just type in phrases when necessary, or if there is some other way to make this easier.

I considered converting rendering of the alphabet mesh to a vector font format that I could then use with Blender, but I need the letters to have a constant line width, and I need to render them as wireframes to fit the art style, so this wouldn’t really work.

To avoid confusion, this is what the final product should look like:

I get the feeling that my request isn’t possible, but I figured I would give it a try. Thank you for the help!
