Creators, starting today Superhive sells your products to AI

Thanks for recording this. I watched about half of it. Maybe I should have watched the full amount before replying here, but here are my big takeaways:

  • The video seems pretty good. Actually the first few seconds summary does it injustice because it makes it look kinda dismissive
  • There was no ToS change, that part seems to have been misinformation here (which I then did propagate on the fediverse, mea culpa)
  • I still think it would be a *good idea* to assume that enterprise deals for AI stuff are by default not wanted.

I think if there’s one big takeaway from this, it’s that… I suspect nearly nobody would opt-in to have their content trained by AI on Superhive, were that an option. But given that, if the possibility of known AI companies are approaching and asking for purchase, then “if you don’t reply, it’s de-facto you opting in” is a bad situation. And I think some people realizing that here made them upset.

The AI situation is different from other enterprise companies. There is a way in which being pulled into an AI dataset feels like, well actually even is, being cut out of things. Even some of the most liberally licensed assets under CC BY cannot be upheld in an LLM since attribution doesn’t really happen once stuff is pulled into the model. But the legal side is one thing, the feeling that one is being given up is another.

I think here is something to think about: CG Cookie and Superhive’s audience and indeed marketplace participants are saying “hey, we really are quite unhappy with what’s happening with AI companies, and we’d like you to distance yourself from them and AI output, it doesn’t work for us”. I think it would be wise for CG Cookie to orient itself in that way, but hey, I’m not you all, I can’t decide what you’re going to do. But it seems like it’s what your audience wants.

But, knowing there wasn’t a Terms of Service change, I think that was a thing many people, myself included, got the impression of in this thread, and that wasn’t the case. I’m glad to hear that part was not the case, and hope that information makes it out more clearly, at least.
