Critical Blender bug found in 4.0+ (parent to vertex group, keep transforms)

When parenting an object to a vertex group and trying to keep transforms, you’ll find it won’t keep it’s position, as it did in all previous versions.

I don’t have Blender 4.0 installed anymore, but I’m 90% sure this bug existed there as well.

To work around this (without having to create empties), I have been having to use older versions of blender to open the newer versions, parent, and then back to new version.

I know for sure this bug exists in 4.2, but like I said, I’m almost certain the same issue existed in 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 (before I uninstalled).

Just wanted to report it- let me know if there’s a better place to put this!

If you ask if someone else has noticed this two or someone can explain what options has to be used for this then you are at the right place…

To report this for 4.0 this may be a bit late and not best possible location because: FAQ #3.

Also since the developers already put this into blender itself:

Blender → Help → Report a Bug

this will also include your OS, Graphicscard, Blender version, etc. . See also:

https://developer.blender.org/docs/handbook/bug_reports/making_good_bug_reports/

Please try to describe as precise as possible and also maybe try to make a simple reproduceable blend file. If there are too much questions to clarify then this only spend (“wastes”) time… if you know what i mean

Also: be sure to have read the docu about parenting; especiallly vertex

Because… there is a great possibility that this would be noticed already in the two years since the release of 4.0 in November 2023 !?

(I did not used the vertex parenting feature myself yet at all… so IDK…)

( You have done this for almost two years now ?? )

Happy blending.

There’s another workaround that is far simpler that I use 99% of the time.

Use the 3D cursor to mark the object that needs to be vertex-parented.

Parent said object to the other (vertex or vertex triangle parent)

Don’t worry about “keep transforms”- it’ll move.

Then just shift s 8 it back.

Just open a project with the default cube, take another cube moved to one of the vertex, and try to do vertex parent (keep transforms).

It’ll jump away.

That said, it is possible an addon I have is interferring and causing this bug, I’ve experienced that before.

I do want to add (unrelated), Blender 3.6 has Volume Geonode features that are unavailable in 4.0+. This has been quite fusterating, with the only workaround being rendering in two separate versions with compositing.

Here’s a video showcasing the problem:

Do you not get the same bug?
