cue homer simpson: mmm beer

Ok I’m working on a beer mug render. This is rendered with yafray btw.

Question #1: Are the bubbles too big? I can make them smaller but I’d like to know your opinions before I do.

Question #2: how do I go about making the foamy part? I’ve never modelled “foam” before. Then again I haven’t modelled a whole lot of anything before.

Here is my progress so far:

bubbles are probably about the right size, but they should stack up verticalyl. Are you thinking of a big head or just around the edge kind of foam? (everyone does the big head thing)

yeah I was thinking a big head of foam. I’m not sure how I’m going to texture it to look like foam.

What do you mean by stack vertically? They should line up vertically more or be oblate spheroids that are wider vertically?

yeah, they should line up vertically.

probably for the foam i’d use several layers of alpha blends?

not sure, never done it. nice model + render, btw.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. Man I have a lot of bubbles to re arrange hehe. I alt-Ded the heck out of those to fill it in.

Hi,
I´ve modelled a bit of foam some weeks ago, so I can give you the material settings I used.

Color: White
Alpha: 1.0
Ref: 1.0
Spec: 0.5
Hard: 240

Then I used a texture which effected the Nor and Spec Value:
Type: Voronoi
Size: 0.150
The other values had their default settings.

I don´t know how this settings will look like in you image, because I had just a little bit of foam on the top of my beer, as you can see in the image I linked below.

Hi Trichter thanks for those settings. I will try them next. I already tried to do foam before reading your post so here is an update. I haven’t put a bump map on it yet though.

I do think the bubbles should be slightly smaller

I think you’re probably right.

The foam needs some air bubbles in it.

And the bubbles in the beer: Less bubbles more vertical I suggest you make the bubbles at the bottom really small but they get bigger as they come to the top.

I like it

Thanks for all the suggestions so far everyone.

Kit89 those are good suggestions but in order to do that I think i’d have to just delete all the bubbles and start over with them, which is probably more of an undertaking than I was hoping for.

Here’s another update:

Much better looks almost drinkable

Although the foam looks like a sponge

Maybe a lighter Nor on the bumps /air pockets.
Have the top of the foam flat with no air bubbles.

to do foam that looks truely realistic youll need AAA, but im sure theres a way to fake it. the normal map on the foam needs a lot of finer dimples as well. i think ill go play around and see if i can get realistic looking foam…

What is AAA?

I think you should up the emit value, and make it ever so slightl transparent at the top.

Here’s an update with a lower NOR value. Is it better or was it better before?

Its better but the foam looks hard and crusty. you should probably make it slightly see thru. Other than that the scene looks great ^^;

It is transparent, see the light emiting from the bottom of the foam.

For better foam

Try making the top of the foam flat with no air bubbles.

I looks almost perfect.
