Customizing selection behavior

Hi,

I’m completely new to the amazing world of blender, although kind of a veteran in 3d, coming from Modo, so I’ll probably be posting a lot of stupid questions in the coming weeks.

Question number one has to do with Lasso select (ctrl+right click & drag… probably ctrl+left click & drag by default). The current behavior is, that it adds to my current selection, although most of the time, I’d prefer the tool to automatically deselect all before starting a new selection.
Is there a way to set up the lasso selection so that it would work the way I would like it to?
I find it kind of clicky to always have to press A before starting my selection, oftentimes i even forget to do so.

File / User Preferences / Input
Search for lasso
Expand the Lasso Select under the 3d view category and disable ‘Extend’
Then use Save User Settings

ok, new day, new problem… What I would like is to bind the Deselect All command to Action-clicking (LMB in my case, RMB by deafault)anywhere on empty space inside the 3d viewport. I found the select/deselect toggle command in the input preferences, but I can’t seem to get it to work.
