I thought I’d share an illustration project that I worked a couple of years ago using Blender. The art was developed for a web article on careless cyber security behavior. I was aiming for a sculpted paper appearance. Right before the article went live, a stakeholder was introduced and required a different direction. They decided to use a stock photo.
I received the assignment via email on a Wednesday morning. After reading the article, I called the client and discussed all of the project requirements. Wednesday afternoon I researched the article’s subject and began looking for inspiration. Wednesday evening I quickly sketched three very different loose concepts. The initial sketch is below.
The client approved the basic concept on Thursday morning but wanted a few adjustments. They wanted a stronger digital/cyber theme and they decided on new pixel dimensions for the web page. The sketch below reflects these edits.
I also decided to make the dragon a little taller and thus more intimidating. And the impact of the computer user’s poor security decisions seemed more unsettling with the dragon turning upon the user immediately.
I began the 3d Friday. I built and posed the dragon and woman in Zbrush. Then I imported those elements into Blender. I created the additional 3d models, textured, lit, and rendered within Blender. I tweaked the render in Photoshop and delivered the completed art Monday morning.
There are some areas that could use improvement. I would have liked at least another week for the execution.
Thanks for checking out the work! Let me know if you have any questions.
