Should be fairly straight forward. A simple whiteish rock with some SSS.
there are a few marble shaders around. Alabaster would use a similar approach:
I already have some marble set up
I can modify these and see what it gives
I thought I had some alabaster but It was more for bl then cycles
there must have been some cycles mat for this already done hopefully

this is quite old and a bit simplistic material, but you can tweak it to make it better.
If that’s like a marble material, then I know I’ve seen a few marble tutorials. Kent Trammell has one in the shader forge series and I think I saw another from CG Masters as well (but I forget offhand who did the course).
there are other colors too like these

did a quick test with white + noise +SSS
but not really good yet

i’m trying to model some canopic jars
color is not the same but can be adjusted i guess
thanks
happy bl
tried secrop nodes
and gives very strong spots
might be a way to make more transparent
thanks

it may be the scale of your model… the material was thought to work at 1 blender unit = 1 meter…
Anyway, I’ve been working in a marble material collection in the last weeks… I may try to include alabaster also…
Must do some experiments!!
I think there was one made last year but might be wrong
or part of a certain lib and not finding it now
and did not find any link for that one in my notes
anyway
I did one that is beginning to look good but too shiny have to experiment to get a more diffuse look
let us know if you get some nice new mat always interesting
but as I said there are my different textures / colors for alabaster
so have fun
thanks for feedback

Compared, 2.49 clearly has some advantages… Guess, #6 was fast to render too (at least i hope it did not need 1.2k video card or a farm to render noise free in predictable amount of time :D).
Try this. You may need to tweak it based on your scene scale - my chess piece is about 1 blender unit high.
looking nice
did you change the radius for SSS ?
size = 1 in object mapping
thanks

will play with some of the parameters and see what else I can get
but it is a close approximation
did a quick test here
thanks

I modified the 2 colors and change the noise intensity a little
and get a much whiter back color with very light yellow noise
