Cycles Glow/Emission

I want to know how to achieve a glow like this one:

In Cycles an object with an emission shader that is strong enough to get noticed allways is kinda shadeless,end combining it with some other shaders didnt worked for me,it looks strange every time i tried it,i think mixed with diffuse looks the best.But a glowing glass material isnt working,if you have a strong glow you cant look through the glass
The only way i know is with compositing.

What is it missing from what you were looking for? Anything that you can’t get by tweaking stuff like the IOR, the Blend or the Strength?
