Cycles render of RC helicopter

Awww… they used the first version for the Blender Nation pic. Congrats though.

123ERTYY:

Thanks!

Agonyworm:

Cycles does a nice job of rendering with a simple lighting setup. I was a bit unsure of how hard it would be to switch over, and there are some features i miss from Blender internal, like the lack of object based coordinates which are useful for positioning decals, but i suspect those features will be included before much longer. All in all i’m finding cycles pretty straight forward to use.

QS Dragon:

I don’t know about the sparkles. I have a yellow one, and the only place i can see any sparkles is the silver paint. Is that what you’re seeing? I guess i could try a to create a sparkle node setup. What color do you have and where is it sparkly?
Thanks for mentioning about Blender Nation, i’d not realized they’d posted it there.

chk:

Cool, do you ever fly them together?

Animaniac888:

Yeah, thanks to the comments here i’ve been able to make some improvements since my first render. Still it is cool that it was chosen, i didn’t even know they did that.

Really nice…since my son just got real one !

Bluecd,

Thanks. What color did he get?

Wow, this looks super realistic. Great job on it.
I actually need to learn better modeling :\

The chopper looks great but 16 minutes to render one frame? O.o
Have you compared it with blender render? I’d love to see how much different it is.

aeTIos:

Thanks. For the most part the modeling on this was not too bad. The hardest part was the nose which i have redone since the first post. The flat metal plates are extruded curves rather than mesh, it was easier that way with all the cutouts.

Robitron:

Well i didn’t see 16 minutes as too bad, since i’m not animating it at this point. I don’t have much for a graphics card at the moment so i’m using cycles on the cpu. I have ot rendered it with BI, but it might be worth a try.

I’m in the same boat with the graphics card so I render strictly with blender render for now. That’s why I was wondering. I like animating so 16 minutes is a long time for that. lol Anyway, I’m hoping to get a graphics card that will work soon, just not sure when.

Something I’ve been playing around with though, with blender render, is the environmental lighting and ambient occlusion. So far, I’ve had pretty good results and reasonable times. So, maybe there’s still hope? lol

Anyway, again, it really does look great!

looks nice…I think it is very promising and i really like it…the rc helicopters always been wonderful to watch… so is this it’s amazing and having the extraordinary features that really make it more demanding.thanks for sharing.

One with blur in the rotating wings please!!!

I concur that this is an excellently executed project. Really beautiful work and revisions. If I was to offer one thing I notice in the name of realism that would be adding a little depth of field to your render. Doesn’t need much, but since these are pretty small 'copter’s you would typically see some blurring cues in the seam of the back drop and maybe even a little in the blades in the shots where the they are pointing back away from camera. Other than that…sweet work.

Agree with Bao2, motion blur please. =)

Great job… mine is blue and I have heard of the prop trick for better forward motion… I will try it.
