So I’m very new to blender and still learning the ropes but I wanted to do a quick speed test with cycles against my favorite rendering engine Bunkspeed.
Results were unfortunate but as I understand cycles is young still so perhaps the rendering speed will increase in time?
Renderings were done with 3xGTX580s at 1280x720 resolution with 1000passes.
It depends on the Cycles settings, the defaults are overkill.
Start with direct light settings in Integrator Presets.
I gave Bunkspeed a shot but very hard to get something out of it.
I even cant move the camera where i want, give up after 15 minutes.
The prizes are also not bad 995 -3500 $.
Mib you think the cycle defaults are overkill?? I thought the scene was still quite noisy actually. Not sure what you mean by “Start with direct light settings in Integrator Presets.” but I turned off the world settings, deleted the lamp and the entire scene is just lit with two emitters.
You think Bunk is hard to get results??? I own the $3500 version and perhaps because I’ve had my mits on it for years now and I’m quite fluent but I think I could teach anyone the basics in 15 min and they would be getting fantastic results. As for the camera rotation, the camera is your viewport so whatever you see you get. You can create many different cameras with there own settings and views etc and render them all if you chose. Very easy stuff.
More than happy to lend a hand should you want to try again.
I’ve heard before that Bunkspeed uses a lot of cheats when it comes to lighting (which is designed more for HDR product shots than full-fledged scenes like seen with Cycles, heck their website states that they only just now implemented meshlights and I’m not sure if they use full GI with multiple bounces and caustics).
In short, I’ve heard that you shouldn’t expect to see Bunkspeed giving you extensive material building tools (like the node-based building in Cycles) or the ability to make full-fledged interiors or outdoor scenes. Some here also do not believe in this engine being spectacular enough to warrant such a high pricetag when engines like Thea and Vray only cost a small fraction of that.
Hi Mugz, can you share the blend maybe?
I try to change Cycles settings for faster rendering if it is possible?
Nothing against Bunkspeed but it is out of my prize range, i am Octane owner and may give it a try too.
I don’t know about the cheats Ace I just know I’ve been rendering with maxwell, hypershot, bunkspeed, vray, matrix and 3design over the years and Bunkspeed is hands down the best combination of speed and quality out of the bunch hands down. I’ll also add that I still use these software but Bunkspeed is without question my go to.

I think I’d def agree with you here though, Blender is my first experience with the nodes and after seeing how they translate to the UI I’m a node fan all the way! Thea I’m not familiar with, while Vray 1.5 I use every single day and it’s complete garbage IMHO.

Mib if you look at my other post “Please Help” in this thread I attached that clock scene to that thread. Let me know what you come up with I’m curious. Yes Bunk is pricey but like I said quality for the speed can’t be beat, Plus I got a good deal
Always wanted to try Octane though! What are you’re thoughts so far?
Hi, make a small test.
First, as doublebishop mention, change the tiles size to 256x256 in performance settings.
I can upload the file if you want.
Render with both cards (spec in signature) in 56 seconds.
Nice time stamp! I’ll give it a go when I get into the office my home computer with the 780 is still not functioning with cycles yet…
I DID however download the demo of Octane last night and wow, blazing fast render that is insane! Attached is the pic with 16k samples that took 5:56. There is no emmisive lights and the glass is not where it is suppose to be because I don’t know how to move geometry or apply emmisive lights yet.
Yo yo, fast.
You can´t move geometry in Octane in you 3d application only, emission is a diffuse material property.
There is an addon for Blender in alpha stage, it work like cycles then with octane.
No export anymore.
Try the 2.68 Release Candidate it is very stable and support your GTX 780.
You don´t have to uninstall 2.67, only unzip and run, i have 3-4 blender versions on my system for testing and so.
The man mib, thanks for the update! I’ll er a go when get home and see how it works.
If I can’t move geometry in octane can I hide it?? If say I had a sphere within a sphere how would I apply color to the inner one if I can’t move or hide the outer??? No geometry movement…seems like a handicap to me, no?
You have to rename your materials to something meaningful, like glass, bell etc…
Right click in render window give you a material list.
Hide only with transparence.
But this is not a Octane forum, i look often in Octane forum too, make a thread there.
