I asked the same question months ago and never got an answer. I think it is only for linux systems

Sorry folks. The render daemon does not work. The inclusion of the button is apparently a taunt. There is a developer or two who currently have the project in their hands, though, and there has been discussion about it on the blender.org forums. Additionally, there have been a couple of render-launching front ends developed for Windows systems within the last year. Their names do not immediately come to mind, but a couple of minutes searching these very forums should turn them up. As for Linux systems - I don’t know if anything has been developed, but it would seem to me that some careful networking and scripting could appropriately start command line renders on your various machines.
