is this normal lagging, or an actual issue with the constraint?
the top one is doing some wierd stuff while the bottom is fine.
Are the bones targeting each other with Damped Track constraints?
That creates a dependancy cycle. It shouldn’t matter logically, but it confuses Blender about the order that they should be evaluated.
The quickest solution is to create a parent bone for each one at the same location, and have the ‘child’ piston bones target the parent bones instead.

The same principle applies with objects too.
Having the two objects targeting each other will still create a cycle.
Adding a parent Empty object for each of them, then getting the objects to target the other side’s parent Empty will remove the dependancy.
