DDClip problem -- Need help

I have been using DDClip Free 2.23 to sequence and add sound to my videos for a while now, and it’s been great.

Today, I went to start up DDClip and it will not display the video window at all. Hitting F8 gets me nothing; selecting it from the menu gets me nothing.

Uninstalling and reinstalling it didn’t fix anything.

Has anyone had this happen? And does anyone know how to fix it? DDClip is fairly useless without its ^&*%&^ing video display.

I’m on WinME (I know… Want to buy me a copy of WinXP, because I sure as hell can’t afford it right now…), but up until now that hasn’t been a problem. The only thing I changed recently (that I am aware of) is going from DirectX 8.1 to DirectX 9.0b. And, of course, you can’t go back from that…

[Addendum: It’s probably not this. I just installed DDClip on my girlfriend’s computer – she has 8.1 – and it won’t work there either. WTF???]

Okay: I found out what happened, so I’ll post it here for anyone else having this trouble.

DDClip has in its settings “Default” for AVI video mode by default, naturally enough. “Default” attempts to match codecs with most efficient display modes, beginning with fullscreen. Since Windows Media Player automatically updates codecs, codecs change without the user really being aware of it.

Some AVI codec on my computer apparently updated to a new version that doesn’t coexist with DDClip’s fullscreen mode. So, DDClip’s “default” never gets past it, and the video never plays.

So, just go to Settings and manually set the AVI display option to “decompress and then draw”. Viola; problem worked around. Until the next thing breaks…
