Dear Blender Artists

I’m a singer-songwriter and I’m looking for someone who would like to make an animation-clip for one of my songs. I’m fully sponserd so I can’t pay you but lots of people will few your work. Love Katlin www katlin nl

without pay, don’t expect to get anyone to work for you.
Unless ofcource it’s somekind of a die hard emotional fan or something… how many of there are here anyway?

Katlin, you do realize that there’s this thing now called the internet on which animators can show their work?
Do you expect to make money with your music? If so, you need to pay for your animations. To expect less, simply shows an insulting level of greed and selfishness.
I now know of one singer-songwriter whose music I will intentionally ignore.

Katlin:
I would consider this, but would need to know these things before moving forward:

  1. What is the song?
  2. How do you know that a lot of people would view, and where, and why?
  3. What does ‘fully sponsered’ mean?

please feel free to mail me privately for more discussion.

I suggest looking for students that are looking for a graduation project.

Look at this animation:

Thought of You - by Ryan Woodward

Seems a good opportunity for a few of us to gather around the campfire and sing the “kumbaya” song. Oh wait, KAITLIN can sing while we clap and hum. And someone can video record this, and there you have your music video. Aren’t I good ?

Money should not be the only reward 3d artists should pursue, especially budding 3d artists. Some artists even pay just to have their work exposed. It’s really a win win situation here.

Katlin, hello. I am also a musician. Obviously Blender is very handy for making music videos. I want to suggest to you to learn the basics of Blender. With only basic knowledge, and a little creativity, you can make some very impressive stuff. Sure, it is an undertaking, but you will be able to use that knowledge over and over again, and you will not be relying on another artist to interpret your needs.

If money is not pursued, then you should be creating projects that meet YOUR artistic vision - not the vision of some guy too cheap to pay for his own promotional materials. If you work for this guy, you’re a sucker - who cheapens the work of 3D artists everywhere. Apparently 3D artists have no value, right?
If you do these things for free, all it shows is that you have absolutely no ability to create your own ideas. You have no artistic vision. Can’t you come up with even one idea that you want to create? Then do it, and put it on YouTube. It will get at least as many hits as some no-name European singer-songwriter.
Good grief.

Should you work for Kaitlin for free? Here is a helpful chart to aid your decision.

Katlin - Would you be going through the motions of recording this song if you weren’t being funded? So why should we?

If you are being funded, surely that includes the budget for your music video? Why are you keeping it to yourself then and insisting that the video artist work for nothing?

With all the best will in the world for your future career - get stuffed!

I think she doesn’t mean disrespect. She’s just asking, and it’s never wrong to just ask. Nobody knows the circumstances of her sponsorship. We all ask for things for free in our lives from time to time. That said, I’ll address Katlin: I’m pretty sure a music video of any quality won’t come free or even cheap. A single render done for a client takes a lot of back and forth. A video is a big deal, with lots of aspects to consider. In short, though you may not know it (and I believe this is the case), you are asking for quite a lot. It’s the same as anyone here asking “Katlin, will you write an album of songs to go with my video? For free?”

There are rules about asking for free work. Read them before posting.

Mods can you please delete this thread.

I would say that you can’t expect this type of work without payment. Yes, I have worked for free for friends of mine that were getting off the ground, but had they asked for anything substantial, other than some sub par advertising, I would have definitely charged them for the labor. Sure, you are talking about free opensource software being used on here, but people have jobs and other parts of their lives that either make them money or require the used of money. The old adage of “Time is money” plays its part here. How much money is up to the contracted party. Plus the fact that resources are going to be used here. I have a charging scheme that may or may not be close to other parties that do work like this. This is how I charge.

  1. Time either by the hour or day
  2. Storage space (on the HDD for all files that are used in the production of your product including the time that the master files are stored on the computer per megabyte)
  3. Added expenses (for software that I may not have but need to meet your requirements, or other special circumstances like publishing fees and the like)
  4. Licensing fees that may be required to use copyrighted materials or purchase there of.
  5. Transfer fee to cover the media in which the files are transferred to the customer

Sounds like a lot, but it isn’t. The highest part of the bill is labor, which anyone breaking into the field of 3D work and the like can charge around $325 US per day fair market value or around $32.50 per hour for a 10 hour day. Since you said you were sponsored, it sounds like you have someone picking up the bills, at least that’s what it means here. Another adage “You have to spend money to make money.” I thought this ridiculous until a business came along at an early point in my life, and it rings true for the most part.

Bottom line, asking for free work since people here are using free software is not really cool. There are some of us that use many pieces of EXPENSIVE software to do the things we love to do, meaning Blender isn’t the only thing in the pipeline. Look at your market and how much you stand to gain and find out how much you would be willing to spend to achieve your goals. It just might be worth it.

So many negative responses here.
I guess what she means by sponsers, is like motor or motorcycle racing. It’s an expensive hobby but people will contribute to the overall costs and get coverage or advertising in return. It is actually standard practice at amateur and professional level.
Anyone taking up the offer would be doing it for self promotion.
Off course animation clip can mean a simple graphic or a full three minute video and it is likely that katlin doesn’t understand just how much work that involves.

The whole self-promotion thing is bull crap.

Why spend your time, which by the way you’ll never get back, on someone else’s idea, when they plan on profiting from said work, that’s not the main point, but it’s a major issue.

Either work on your own thing for free, or get paid to work on OTHER people’s things. The logic is quite simple, if she cannot grasp this small fact then perhaps she, or who ever else is managing/ posting this crap should read a business 101 book.

EDIT: If the ‘Oh but I don’t have the money’ or any other excuse is used, well perhaps you should figure that part out, before asking for someone to commit time, and effort to what ever project you’re working on. I wouldn’t ask a musician to do work for me, using his resources, and equipment, for the slight chance that some stranger might hear his work, and offer him paid contract work…

I live in a large city most of my friends are artists, musicians, dancers, dj’s, sound, lighting engineers, etc., they help one another out all the time. It’s called community and friendship. If someone wants to have a small town view of how things ought to work, fair enough. But to insist that everyone else must have the same view. that’s called fascism/tyranny or in small town language BULL CRAP.

She dosen’t have one or two sponsors, she has quite a few. So she obviously isn’t working for nothing. I find it highly insulting that she has come here and said, basically, “Hey, I’m worth paying, but you are not”.

Another thing, If she is “fully sponserd” (sic), then she would have got a budget for promotion, which should include a video. So, I ask myself, who got that money so that I am being asked to work for free?
