Is it possible to get a glossy clay look like in Blender when modeling? As in the way objects look like in Modo during modeling time
I don’t know how it is in Modo, but have you tried playing with the “solid OpenGL lights” (User Preferences -> System) , you can obtain some interesting results with them.
Also can you share the detail of what you did in blender user preference?

Yes, but that’s not the point, the point is that with Blender you can customise the opengl lights (even disabling some), their colors, their direction a lot in order to obtain a result that may suit you better, try and see if you can closer to that Modo light type, it should be possible to get close to this.
