I would really like to know a way to de interlace in the compositor. So I can edit the footage without and extra file conversions.
This was my attempt
It did not work as you can see.
Run the clip through the vse first as it has a deintetlacer. But you are stuck with the extra render step. Perhaps you could resize vertically by 50%. That should discard alternate lines but reduces resolution.
do you know of an addon that will deinterlace in the compositor.
Umm do you know what an interlaced frame is? Try vertical blur 2 pixels high.
Yes I do the video is 60i I want it 30p. I tried to do this by taking one interlaced frame and combining it with the opposite interlacing in the next frame but for some stange reason (it may be my node setup) it is not working as I thought.
Imagine that you can split the interlaced fields into seperate frames. Then the footage would be 60 frames per second not 30. They actually occur at different intervals, and appear as smooth movement when replayed. You trade temporal resolution for vertical resolution. So no recombining them in any order will improve the venetian blind effect (on a full combined frame) due to motion between fields.
The only way to keep frame resolution (2 fields together) and reduce the motion artifact is to ascertain the region of the error and mask it. Then apply a small vertical blur only to that place.
To test for the error you should compare the fields within a frame not the next frame. I guess what you need is a comb filter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comb_filter but I am not sure how you would construct one using nodes.
Otherwise you must either blur one pixel up to the other or resize the image down 0.5 and up 2.0. Hopefully with dumb box type algo filter.
