I’m learning Blender. As is often the case things don’t work as expected. In this case however as far as I can tell the delete key is supposed to delete a selected object. It doesn’t. I’m using a Logitec wireless keyboard for Mac - (Blender on Mac as well). Yes, the delete key functions in any other application. What am I missing here with blender?:no:
Deleting selected objet in Blender needs two steps :
- DELETE key : to call the delete function
- ENTER key : to confirm the deletion
If it still isn’t working out, you can also use the x key to delete objects. It still requires confirmation with ENTER.
Teach your muscle memory to use the x key combos. X d for delete object. X f for faces in component mode. X e - edges, x v - vertices, x c for collapse etc.

I don’t have a Mac available to quickly check, but isn’t the Delete key on a Mac the same as Backspace on a standard keyboard? If that’s the case, it may be just a keyboard mapping problem.
When starting out with Blender, it’s a good idea to get an image or something that has the most common keyboard shortcuts on it. Just do a google image search for something like “blender keyboard shortcuts” or something. Forget any hope of finding ones with less basic shortcuts 'cause what key combination does what is very likely to depend on which viewer your mouse pointer is hovering over as well as which mode it is in. So a pull key map image would be so cluttered as to be useless. Just use a basic one to get you used to the basics and noticing the general trends (like the X key usually being used to delete things) and then try to slowly build on your knowlege of these trends. For example X in the node editor will delete selected nodes as you might expect, and when the nodes are deleted the connections to/from them are also deleted, but you can use Ctrl + X to delete a node and the connections will just get rewired as if the deleted node wasn’t there to begin with.
A keymap for the absolute basics can be quite handy when starting out.
On Macs, well mine anyway. the ‘Delete/Backspace’ button doesn’t work as a delete key in Blender. I always use the ‘x’ key. However that has suddenly stopped working. Please read this part. I have checked the ‘x’ key in other apps, it’s fine. It’s just stopped working in Blender but only in Object mode which is leaving orphaned origins.
I couldn’t delete the orphaned origin points and checked in two forums, in both, the people answering assumed the OP was a total idiot telling him, ‘you can’t delete origin points’ and so he didn’t get an answer. It could well be the same thing going on for me. I’m having to delete from the Outliner which is really tedious.
I’ve had to restart Blender and it’s started working again. Aps glitch. If you’re a newbie you don’t know what is a glitch and what is normal behaviour. Please guys, don’t always assume the OP is a moron.
