Demon

Heres a little face I worked on today. I wanted to try to make a face without a photo reference to see what i came up with. The result was a grumpy demon.

Wires please

Here’s the mesh:

The wireframe looks good from the side, but from the front the face looks kinda weird. The face seems too pointed, and the mouth take up an inordinate amount of space. There should be a bit more of a jaw, too.

I thought the mouth looked a bit overwhelming. Here is another version with a smaller mouth and some tweaking around the chin.

Perspective

As a tip, you shouldn’t make his mouth frown yet, you should model his face in a relatively relaxed position, and add expression later.

Get rid of the teeth, until you modeled all of them.

I’ve added some horns to the head and added some eyes. Yeah, the teeth don’t look so great so I’ll axe them and try to do all the teeth later.

As I look at this more and more, I don’t like the closed mouth look. I think I’m going to attempt to open up the mouth and show the inside of the mouth some. Any suggestions on a tecnique for this would be great.

The eye detail was painted on after rendering.

I wanted to try out the sculpt tool on this thing and redo my avatar. Here is my latest attempt with this head.

I might continue to add more and more detail on this thing and eventually some texturing.
The pupil and specular highlight on the eye added post-render.

looks nice, i like the eyes they look sinister. one thing with the material, turn down the spec.

the head looks much better in the second pic. this is probably because it is thinner and more demonic. i think it would be really cool if you went on to make his entire body. then it would look extremely scary.

I did a little more sculpting on this and also adjusted the specularity, as well as added a little fake SSS. I’d like to do a body at some point.

Blender will not allow me to seperate this mesh into seperate parts without crashing (vert count is around 58k). I’m hoping this is a memory issue and will try again when I get home (home machine is much beefier). I want to seperate the horns and give them a different material that looks more interesting.

I figured out my issue with seperating the mesh. Make sure you apply the multires levels before attempting to seperate a mesh, heh. Anyways, here is a little more detail and also a different material on the horns. All suggestions and comments are welcome as always.
(ignore the uglies around the ear, I haven’t attached the ears yet)

As a demon, it looks very classical. Something I’d expect to find on a 500-year-old gothic arch. Pretty refreshing take, actually, given that everyone’s approach to demons now is ‘we need more blood, MORE BLUE FLAMES, and make his mouth huge for no reason, and stick another face in it, and give him an arm sticking out of his butt’

There aren’t even any real problems I can see with the shape of the model itself, the under-lying skull shape is accurate as far as I can see. Everything looks pretty much great. The only thing I could comment upon would be the mouth, right under the nose seems too pulled back. But considering that’s the only thing I can really find, that’s great. XD

Ok, what do you folks think about this texture for his skin? I think its a bit more interesting than the plain red, kind of like fire. This was painted using Blender vertex painting. There is no painting on the ear yet.

Heres an edit with darker eyelashes and dark lips:

Looks pretty cool, I like the colors you used.
My only suggestion is that it appears that the eyelids don’t wrap around the eyes propery, looks like a gap in the outside corners of the eye. But that may be from the angle and/or lighting.
Keep it up.

The lips kinda kill it for me, the eyelids look good though. Anyway, it’s interesting watching this progress under the watchful eye of sculpt mode.

The eyes WERE out of wack (easily fixed with sculpt mode grab) and I agree the lips weren’t too great. I also didn’t like the light color on the top of the head too much so I toned it down some. Here is yet another update:

I think having different brushes in vertex paint mode would be really cool and make it easier.

Ok, I’m moving on to the torso now. Here is what I have so far. The head and neck still need a little work where the mesh is disconnected (as you can see from the black line).

nice demon… Keep it comin.
