So I hate to kick a dead horse as a newbie on here but I haven’t seen this exact post concerning DOF. The blur looks like junk… pixelized with dots. I’ve played with the max blur settings and threshold and still no fix.
I have a simple node setup with the defocus inbetween the render layer and the comp output. Is there another method so that the dof is accurate and clean? I’d like to stay with blender internal because of the control over textures I’m familiar with. Also you can see the large ring that’s closest to the camera - when it passes over the central sphere it’s no longer blurred which it should be.

Wow… newbage confirmed! Of all the tweaking I did, not sure why I didn’t try that haha.
But extreme DOF changes against geometry can lead to blurry edges that should be sharp. Then you need to set up render layers based upon depth. Or just use Cycles.
