But still, that would be the government carving out a huge presence in general commerce, this would be unfair to people who run services to help others sell their work because for one thing, they will be paying into the competing government system and second of all, there’s the fact that the government does not have to make a profit in the service as long as they can pay their bills with revenue from other sources.
And I would disagree with the apparent generalization that all intermediaries are parasites, for one thing it costs a lot of money to run the servers and manage the service, so they have to take a cut if they wanted to keep everything very affordable for the artist. Second, a service that doesn’t take any commission from any work as well as not charging the artist anything to use it is a business that is not getting revenue and is not making a profit, it’s silly for a business to think it’s good practice to run something at a deficit unless they have another department that is still giving them a net profit.
Now one might complain about some sites that take a commission of 60 percent or more, but there’s always another way out there like setting up your own storefront with the help of services like PayPal (in which you can sell a near-unlimited amount of product while only having to send a very small cut to the transaction service. There’s also the flat payment you would need to make for the hosting service, in which even that would only be a small chunk if you sell large quantities)
Sure, one can find agreement that people should be able to loan products to other people as long as they have bought it and is in their possession, but it’s different then a system deliberately designed to give the government an advantage that would eventually put businesses like PayPal, Amazon, Gamer’s Gate, and Turbosquid out of business.
