"Devil in Detail" Photoshop question!

I’m trying to do this tuorial,
here is the link: http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/premium_content/3d__and__animation/devil_in_the_detail
I’m following it pretty well until I get to the eyes, step 18 to 22, how do I add a gradient to an empty layer? And on the 19th step the image has a fade from the center, light to dark, and I was wondering how that was done as well. Since it wasn’t explained, I’ve just recently started using Photoshop CS2 so I’m not really familiar with all of it yet

I don’t know if the tools are exactly the same in CS2, but in Photoshop 7, if you hold down the Paint Bucket you can switch to the gradient tool. Try turning this on and dragging around the canvas; you’ll see very quickly how it works. The fading from the center is a radial gradient; select this from the tool options bar.

Thanks a bunch man, saved me a headache.
