Did you have the same?

Hello there

I’m struggling with my sculpting results. I really can’t get the logic of “smooth” tool.

First the “smooth” destroys all the forms, then it’s really hard to smooth anything when the model is remeshed.
But how do I smooth the lips and such narrow places without losing the structure? No matter how I try, I lose the forms.

The smooth tool takes the average of the vertices. If you have a vertice at [2,5,10] and another at [6, 2, 4], with the smooth brush at full strength, both vertices will move to [4,3.5,7]. If you want the smooth brush to have less of a strong effect, you can turn the strength down. I personally never go higher than 0.3 strength on the Smooth brush, and I find that 0.2 works perfectly for slightly smoothing without deforming in most cases

Along with @joseph excellent advice, remember that a sculpted model isn’t really made to be a finished product ( though it can be), but rather a base to add a re-topo model from so that the mesh isn’t in the millions of polygons range…and that you can then use it to bake out your normal maps to get the details on to the re-topo…and you can then also rig it and animate or pose without a crash to desktop…

What a disappointment! So to make the sculpt look perfectly smooth it should have a re-topo? Really? So I will never make a perfect model just bu sculpting…

Thanks a lot. I’ll try it.

No. I said

Sure with time effort and experience, consider how much you would need to subdivide to get as smooth as you want!!.. and if you ever want to animate or even pose that model you will have all sorts of problems…that is why you retopo, to clean the topology ( take a look at your sculpted mesh in edit mode) you need clean quad mesh as well as a reduced poly count to lighten up the load on you processor…even trying to texture a sculpted model is difficult trying to select a loop to add a seam…ackkk!!
There are some great modelers that sculpt wonderful things… Just watch Yansculpts making a character…

Note: Notice also that he retopos Tifa!

First, Smooth tool is not the only one in the mode.
There are often several ways to sharpen a shape.
You can recreate angles using Scrape, Flatten tools.
You can emphasize ridges and valleys by using Crease, Multiplane Scrape tools.

Second, Smooth brush is a brush.
You can decrease its size and its strength to use it only where it is needed.
If you are talking about the mesh filter, effect of filter is limited to unmasked areas.
So, you can use a mask to protect region that should not be smoothed. Whatever tool you are using.

Third, there are different kinds of smooth deformation methods for smooth brush and smooth filter.
Laplacian smooth is default.
But Surface Smooth method is supposed to preserve main shape.
