…when you got into 3D animation? I was curious as to where everyone started. I’m new to Blender, but I have done some work in other programs. The first one I started out with was (don’t laugh) Anim8or. I also did a few things in Nendo, then I tried max (bleggh) and maya (again bleggh). I played with Lightwave a LITTLE (and I do mean little).
1st --Quake model editor - Kirby Bitches
2nd – Quake Army Knife – I made two levels for quake 2
3nd --Milk Shape - I didn’t know how to use this
4rd – Blender – I was like WTF BBQ this is confusing. I didn’t even make a cube.
Then I did touch anything for years.
Then like in 03/04
5th – Gmax – Joan of Arc tutorial raped me.
Didn’t touch anything again until 07.
6th – Maya PLE – I couldn’t export anything. Not even to another program. I was sad. Stuff was hard to find.
7th – Lightwave – This program was the most beautiful thing I’d used. Very comfortable.
8th – Blender – Eh, what… Is this the same program I used before? Has it really been that long?
9th – 3ds Max trial – Eh, this is as weird to use as Gmax was 4-5 years ago. Oh, wait I imported a head and tried to render it.
10th – Shade – WTF.
11th – Crystal Space – Used it for like a minute because it was more confusing than Shade.
12th – XSI – Actually, I download the trial when I heared about ICE, but never used it. Oh wait, I imported a head (take that Maya PLE) and tried to render it.
I started out with spore, then I turned to blender. Because I felt that spore was too limited… Everyone that likes to play spore, will like if they try, Blender.
Milkshape 3D was my first. I was trying to get into game modding. I couldn’t make sense of it. I ran into Blender while looking for a tool that was capable of modding Morrowind.
I began in the nineties with POVray 1.x (even before Moray became an option), then found 3D Studio (before they put the ‘MAX’ part in), then Lightwave 4.
I played with a bunch of stuff along the way; I can’t remember everything, but I recall toying with (at least) trueSpace, Strata and Real3D, and in the side of OpenSource stuff, Moonlight, OpenFX (weird, dead, dead, can’t do anything, heck no.)
I was not fond of max myself Anim8or (hee hee) was my baby steps, but even Steve Glanville himself said you would be pretty limited in it. I actually used Nendo the most.
I’m pretty sure the first 3D program I used was The Elder Scrolls Construction Set that came with Morrowind. All I really did with it was move objects and add objects to the 3D world.
Not long after, I used SketchUp at school (although I may have used it couple of times earlier - but didn’t really know what I was doing)
A few months later I was browsing the Apple site, looking for Apps to download, when I stubbled across Blender
So before using Blender I hadn’t really used any other 3D apps for more than a a few weeks.
I started out with a free program that came with pc format magazine- I cant remember the name though- Im thinking imagine, or something like that, although Im probably way off- but There was no internet in our country back then, so I had to learn it by trial and error- more error than everything else- I didnt know about subpatches, so the first character I created, the head was a sphere made up of like five thousand points, and I then tried to drag each one to form the shape of the head… hahaha needless to say I didnt touch 3d for about 10 years after that
Worldcraft for the first Quake game (I did doom levels before that, but that’s not really 3D…). I did some milkshape, some lightwave (5 i think…) and I screwed around with just about every freeware / opensource / shareware 3D tool out there. I used anim8or for a while as well. Tried 3DS, Rhino, Maya… just about everything. The only thing I haven’t really tried much of is the 3D sculpting tools out there. I’ll have to play with those
Anywho, Blender was the first one that seemed to fit (even tho the first time I tried it I was totally put off by it, like everyone else i guess). I kept going back to it cause it just worked. Max would crash, Lightwave would screw up or be missing something, Blender would have it or make it easier. So ow it’s just been Blender for the past couple years
