Hi noob here,
I just started trying to learn Blender and have the newest version downloaded. I’ve watched a lot of the video tuts and am really excited about some of the extremely neat things this software is capable of. I’m also extremely frustrated because it seems most of the tuts are using an older version of Blender with a different interface the is more side menus and buttons while the version I just downloaded has most everything down on the bottom. Its a bit of a challenge to learn the software as it is, but most of the tuts I’ve found that would really help me out are using the older layout. Its difficult to understand where stuff is and how to use it when the newer version is so different. Is there a way to set up my interface to match the layout of the older version? I use a wide screen monitor and the menus and buttons being on the sides makes more sense for me anyway.
Thanks
It sounds like you are using blender 2.49b (the latest stable version). The tutorials you are seeing sound to be for the blender 2.5 beta versions. Just use the right tutorials written for the version of blender you are using, trying to use the wrong ones will just cause confusion if you are just starting to learn.
Yes, You have downloaded version 2.49. Actual version 2.5 (cca 1 year ready for use, still in beta, when final it will be 2.6) is completely rewritten from the ground. There are lots of tutorials for new version 2.5 already, but both version are somehow identical if you’re learning basics. Just download 2.49 from official website or try tutorials for version 2.5.
Yeah, grab 2.55 beta, it’s way more userfriendly than the old 2.49 you downloaded.
Also a good tip if you’re a beginner: Check out www.blendercookie.com, they got the best tuts for you!
Thanks for chiming in to help a new guy out, everyone.
Much appreciated. I’ll double check what version I have and go from there.
thanks
Yes! That was it, guys. Just downloaded the 2.55 beta. That is the interface I’ve been seeing on the tuts and the one that seemed better.
Thanks so much! This is so cool!
Blender is a moving target, and even small changes in version numbers seem to mean significant differences in functionality. So even tutorials from a couple of years ago may need updating for 2.49, never mind 2.5x.
