This is stunning in every way. I love the detailing on the heads as well as the colors and patterns on the skin.

If I had one criticism, it’s that the SSS seems a bit strong. I’m not sure we’d see that much light shine through the crests as they have bones inside.

Phenomenal. Not just a great render technically, but you’ve really brought them to life, like a real animal.
They look so cute snoozing together, Like the sun just woke them up. I haven’t seen anything like this.

The shadow terminator on the guy laying in the back (first image) looks a bit strong, especially on his or her thigh.
If you’re using a normal map, are you sure the colorspace is correct?

I referenced horbill’s crests which have similar internal scructure (bony sheet, sponge bone and keratinous sheath) https://media.istockphoto.com/photos/knobbed-hornbill-picture-id535794202
It seems to be scattering a lot of light in right conditions.

It’s light. It’s very strong and it’s mostly diffused through leaves, but where it isn’t obstructed by anything it gives very sharp shadow/light boundary. Sand is pretty light too, and it gives a lot of bounces, that are being reflected by shiny scales giving this effect.
I can’t say it’s intentional, but it’s a consequence of using bright midday HDRI

I featured you on BlenderNation, have a great weekend!
