I’m trying to get better at texturing and I can’t seem to find exactly what I’m looking for. Ideally I’d like to be able to make a material (with a diffuse colour say red) then add a uv texture that I’ve painted (within blender) to mimic dirt and grunge on the edges of my object.
Is there a way to keep the base material colour and only use the grunge uv overlayed onto it. I’ve tried to use screen but I don’t seem to get the base colour.
I think you can do it in Blender with open EXR format, something I am a bit unfamiliar with still, but I know that you can go into GIMP or Photoshop and make a new file with a transparent background, paint your grunge on, then save as either a PNG or PSD, then load that into your texture channel in blender, and click on ‘use alpha’.
I’ve tried using images with alpha’s and that works well enough… you just have to make sure you have pre-multiplied enabled as well or it will give you a really blocky alpha.
I know also that’s it’s possible to paint using another texture in the UV editor (like a clone tool).
I had some success using the the UV image I painted by mapping to UV and then putting the blend mode to screen or multiply depending if I wanted to keep the black or white. I believe I had to uncheck use alpha as well.
