Was looking at examples of looping displacement and this user’s setup from 2018 (blend file at link) used a material node setup for the displacement, which at the time had this result on a subdivided sphere:
However the same blend file in v4.2.1 results in the material animation but there’s no displacement effect (the sphere remains spherical).
Below is the node setup as seen in v4.2.1. Compared to the setup shown in the linked post Blender seems to have auto added a Displacement node, so unsure what else may differ between the Blender versions used that has caused the discrepancy.
