Displacement on beveled path?

I’m making an animation of growing vines/roots using path that is beveled and tapered to get the desired shape and animation. I’d like to have a displacement on the surface to get nice uneven bark look, but looks like it can’t be done. Is that really so? I’m using preferably Cycles to render the final animation. If anyone has any hints how to get the displacement working, I’d be more than happy to hear them. Bump and normal mapping doesn’t really break the surface enough.
Thanks!

Nope …

I think I saw that on the original Star Trek series, the “Doomsday Machine”

JA12 - Thanks mate. Stupid me, I totally forgot to turn experimental on… So embarrassing.
