Distortion after parenting mesh to rig

I’m having a problem wherein the pole angle of a character’s forearm (used to bend like an elbow using an Ik) is largely changing my mesh when a weighted parent is applied between the rig and mesh. I have been trying to fix it for some time and when I manage to better the appearance by altering the rotation, the elbows bend in the wrong direction. (The angle I have that distorts is the only one that seems to have the elbows work correctly)

Any help or advice would be much appreciated as this is my first model and I’m massively struggling despite following hours of tutorials and videos

For your problem, change the IK rotation angle. Also, in Edit mode, bend the elbows a bit so that Blender knows in what direction they are supposed to bend.
