Do heavy materials slow the viewport down?

Hi, when I open a file with a pretty heavy material on my pc it works very slowly, though I can show the materials in material shading. If I open the same file on my laptop it works faster but are unable to show the materials in the material shading.

So correct me if I’m wrong; my theory is that when I open my .blend on a computer strong enough to compute the heavy materials it slows down. While if I open the file on a crappier computer it gives up computing the materials and so work faster.

If that’s right, then is there any way to tell blender to not compute materials while working in the viewport… it feels REALLY strange being able to work faster on a worser computer.

Thanks!

Change the viewport to Solid or wireframe view
Create a very basic shader and use as the render over ride material in the Render Passes panel. This will replace all the materials in the scene with this material
