documentation on a feature

does any 1 know where i can find some documentation on the blender texture paint tool, as for some unknown reason i cant get it to work… it just doesn’t want to paint…

Test on a sphere, like this (Roughly!)
Go to uv face select, have another viewport with uv image editor open. Press u on uv viewport, choose sphere from view. You should see the sphere unwrapped on the image viewport. Choose new image, just test with 256 square. (Note: use multiples of 256 : 512 1024 etc). Create a texture in the usual way. Go to texture paint in 3d view Then open the paint panel on image viewport C or view (paint tool) Browse for your texture on the lowest browse button thingy. Note the icon at bottom of the image window ‘allows painting with left mouse…’ (looks like a pencil). Thats it, start painting on the 3d view and on the image.

couze what you wrote is kinda confusing

and btw i know how to uv map, im looking into the actual 3d dynamic painting streight onto the mesh

I think you’re misunderstanding; the Paint tool paints onto an Image Texture (so .jpg, .png or .avi) and then you save that texture to save the painting. The only thing that paints directly onto the mesh is Vertex Paint.

You need an image open in the UV/Image editor if you want to paint directly on the mesh (otherwise where would your texture painting be stored?). Unwrap your mesh and in the UV/Image editor do Image Menu->New. In the 3D view, switch to Texture Paint mode with the rollout menu in the header. F9 to see the paint tools in a Buttons window. Now when you paint on the mesh in the 3D window, the texture image is also updated in the UV/Image editor window. Is this what you wanted?

I use this method only to rough out textures, then I save the images and add the details in the Gimp or Photoshop. Also this is a good way to mark exactly where seams will fall in the 2d image. I’d be lost without it on anything more complex than a cube.
