Looks more clay like to me then subsurface scattered.
Going to agree with pnoland. It seems to me that a lot of people (not directed squarely at you) don’t really seem to grasp the effect of SSS. The easiest example of seeing this effect is to hold a flashlight up to your hand… you will see the light being disperesed somewhat through your skin and it will have an illuminated sort of effect on your skin with a reddish glow. It’s an almost subtle transparency effect. You can do the same thing with the leaves of a plant and see the effect while similar will be different. The other popular example is seeing the glow of a flame through candle wax.
I understand that… It’s just achieving that effect that is proving to be difficult:o . I’ll keep working on it though…
edit: Ok, here’s another render, using a completely different method. I think I’m getting somewhere… what do you think?
If the light’s coming from behind him then I can see where the SSS effect would come in.
