Doubt with ik constraint

When I apply an ik constraint to a chain bone completely straight, ik does not work, because ik do not know how to bend.

In Maya exists one way (Set Preferred Angle) to tell the ik how it must bend, although the chain is completely straight.

Anyone know if there is anything equivalent in blender?

I’ve always understood that you should model/rig limbs prebent to help the IK

A ‘pole target’ can be used to tell the chain how to bend.

That depends how you do the riggs … In the company where I work, we model completely straight limbs to facilitate the implementation of non-roll bones.

To MCollett:
The pole controls as ik bends, but if the chain is completely straight, the ik does not bends.
