I’m on XP Home and when i download something it usually downloads to all of the users on the computer, but some times it only downloads to mine.Is there a way to set it to either download to my account or to all?
When you download to desktop, or to a desktop folder, the file will end up in [DriveLetter]:\Documents and Settings[YourUserName]\Desktop. Same goes for downloading to My Documents, My Music and so on. So, to make the download available to all accounts, put it in a common folder, like [DriveLetter]:\Downloads.
i accidently said the wrong thing, i meant install, not download.
Does the install setup provide an option to install for all users? If it doesn’t, it installs to all by default but, in a lot of cases, shortcuts are created only for your desktop and Start menu, so you have to manually create them for other users.
from what I’ve seen the “install for only me” option only changes where the start menu shortcuts go
in that case it would go in “C:\Documents and Settings\BLAH\Start Menu\Programs\whatever” instead of “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\whatever”
you can move the things around to show up in different user’s start menus, and right clicking the start button shows a menu with options to open your start menu and the all users start menu folders.
Installing to “me” vs “all users” not only affect the shortcut, but also where the ‘application data’ files is stored.
