Dragon

Hi!

And here we go with another model of a dragon. Took two or three days, off and on. I’m going for a slightly stylized look.

How do you think the wings should connect to the body? This picture I pulled up of a dragon’s muscle suggest I have it flow under the arm, which I have done. But birds (and bats, I think) have the muscles go over the shoulder and onto the breast. Of course they don’t have an extra arm in addition to the wing, so that makes it a bit harder to decide.:spin: I’ve drawn a figure to show you what I mean.

Any comments and critiques are welcome.

Why not having the red one and the upper part of the blue one. I think that makes sence in both lifting an lowering the wing.
One more thing - maybe the eyebrows should have one more sharper edge.

Otherwise it is a great model, keep going!

Looks like a good start, I understand it’s supposed to be stylized. I’ll see what you do as I just love Dragons:D

I like it so far its not like the dragons I’ve seen this is more of a baby dragon.

Do not use this image as reference. It is borked in a multitude of ways. As you noticed the muscles don’t work out at all. Best is if you pick up an image of a bat and look at it. You will notice that there is nearly no visible muscle. This is simply due to the Physics of Flight which governs huge muscles being impossible. Granted it looks imposing to have Schwarzenegger muscles but you are up for a stylized representation so I would strongly advice against over-doing wing muscles. I currently do not have a link to an image right now ( only hard-copies ) so you have to talk with google about this.

Small update, finished the arm, moved the wing up, added -slight- muscles to operate the wing and some other corrections.

@petersk: Glad you like it! Although I don’t think that the eyebrow needs one more edge, I think that you meant the edge on the brow should be sharper?

@Cyborg Dragon: Thanks, I like dragons too!

@darksidownz: I guess it’s age is on the low side, but a baby dragon is still a dragon.:stuck_out_tongue:

@Odjin: Thanks for pointing out the fact that the picture is anatomically incorrect, and a brief lesson on flight. I think we can agree that this guy can’t fly while being physically correct (way too big and heavy to fly without its wing muscles depleting its energy, and too small of a wingspan to body ratio) but this can be grant in a fictional world. I don’t plan on making this guy a hulk.

Nice progress so far, I wonder when you’ll open the mouth and give him some nice sharp Dragon teeth:D

looking great! keep us posted!

I think that you meant the edge on the brow should be sharper?

  • Yes that’s exactly what I meant.

You suppose to give this one a mean or friendly look? Since currently it has a bit more of a menacing look and I don’t think this matches since the entire shape and the “cartoon” goal would promote more a friendly looking dragon. And besides this I would welcome people braking with the dead boring old habit of making dragon monsters <.=.<

Update, finally finished the legs and tail. I had a lot of trouble trying to connect the legs to the body, so if there are any problems in the mesh, it’s probably at the connection. There is also a render of his mouth in a separate attachment, what do you think?

@Cyborg Dragon: Don’t know what dragon teeth would look like, so some (complete) guess work was involved.:stuck_out_tongue:

@Felix_Kutt: Thanks!:slight_smile:

@petersk: Made the eyebrows sharper, but I don’t want it to be too distracting.

@Odjin: Yeah, I’m trying to make the dragon look friendly. I might be dull in my tastes but how does he look menacing?

That’s a great job! I’ve had Blender for three days now so I still have a long way ahead of me before I’m able to generate such quality meshes o.o
I’m thoroughly amazed :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks good! Keep us posted!

Looking good mate, keep up the good work.

The problem are the eye-brow ( eye-bone ) area. The shape is bad chosen for a “friendly” creature. I don’t know how much you know about facial expression but pay once a close look at your favorite movie star and have a look how the surrounding of the eye looks like in different moods. Dragons have stiff facial masks so the mood can not change ( from the facial abilities ) so if you want a friendly one you have to choose the constellation of eye-bone/eye-area to reflect those of an actor.

As well as that, the stance it’s in looks like it’s ready to pounce, and makes it look very predatorial and menicing

Thanks you guys! Minor update, put the teeth in the dragon’s mouth, made some changes to the expression of the face and the stance. There’s also a correction to the leg-body joint. I’m now fairly satisfied with the mesh, if there are no more problems, I’ll go on and texture him.

@Odjin: Ah, I understand. I know a little about expressions, but superimposing them on a reptilian face was a bit challenging for me. Hope the new expression is more friendly.

@Arrows: Ya got a good eye there, I thought the model looked unbalanced somehow.

Bytheway, someone who was looking over my shoulder said that the gums in the mouth are too extreme. You think?

A little bit better but it still looks jumpy. The problem is that the eye-bone is simply too huge. Huge eye-bones are usually used for evil creatures which look “unbeatable” ( spoken from a game devers point of view ). Benevolent characters usually have more fluid shapes. So the eye-bones there are subtle.

Pay attention once to images of a human head. What sort of head shape gives you an eerie feeling? Usually those heads which are rather blocky ( rectangular silhouette ) and have very pronounced facial traits like cheek bones or eye bones. So I would advice to reduce the strength of the eye bone to make the head more “fluid”. This should heavily reduce the aggressive look it has right now.

What goes for the stance this is no problem yet as this is a reference pose. Once rigged it can be pulled into a “gentle” stance ( or “idle” move for those into game deving  )
