Drive an animation strip by an custom property insted of a series of frames?

Normally an animation (NLA-stripe/action) is driven by the sequence of frames between
start frame and end frame.
I want to use values from a custom property instead and make the NLA-stripe or action independent
from frames.
Is this possible somehow? And if “yes”: How can I acchieve this?
