Thank you for all your kind remarks. As to how i did it: Lots of animated textures mapped to a sphere equipped with a displacement modifier. The compositing was done in After Effects. I would love to use Blender for that as well, but I feel that that part of the software is still a little clunky to use. But maybe I just have to focus more energy on learning.
