Dropbox, a storing, syncing and file sharing client. It's awesome!!

I recently downloaded Dropbox and was amazed how simple it was. One simply downloads the software and creates a free account, and voila! you have 2 gb of free storage space. The application just runs in the background and syncs a folder on your computer to the server space. I find that it’s very useful in game projects. You can create an account here http://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTMwMTE4MjI5 This way I get extra storage space :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers

This is the best online tool for file sharing and collaboration!

I love it, one gets surprised how many .blend files fit in 2 gb of storage :stuck_out_tongue:

You can also buy a commercial plan and keep revisions more then 30 days which is amazing.

I think most of my students use DB for online storing and backup just because of that feature.

If you get over 2 GB you can still burn finished projects on a CD.

I discovered it awhile ago by an accident. Great for cooperating on game projects or possibly movies.

I had it for about a year now. I have to agree, its great. It keeps my important files always backed up.

What I think is more amazing it SyncToy from Microsoft. With one click I back up all my files from folder/drive to a different folder/drive. I got it set to “echo” mode so everything that I do in my home folder is also done to my back up of my home folder.

Promotion, much?

well for one person dropbox is more or less like any other sync app

But when you collaborate with others and work on common projects the
true power is visible.

Ok you have to be careful about that not two people open the same file
at the same time - since dropbox has no file check out system.

Cekuhnen, Im really sorry for hijacking this thread. My fault.

You are right. Dropbox does have a lot of power when sharing over the internet.

Why sorry? Sharing opinions is good. Dropbox is nor really the best for everything while it is pretty decent. But it does not offer the medium specific backup you mention.

So it is all fine!

The service is farely new, but they have recently upped the free upload space, and made apps for popular mobile things :stuck_out_tongue:

If people are using it for backup I could see its use as a cheap way to back things up.

But my father bought me a 250GB external hard-drive about a year ago to backup my files on and I just use that instead. (though dropbox also has a file sharing service for projects but for sharing files (like blends) with people on this forum I just use an entirely online service like Mediafire)

Ooo! That looks very nice, I’ve heard about it but haven’t tried yet, I guess I’ll take a look

Ace,

I thought this way as well till my back up disk crashed while making the backup leaving both disks unreadable. well that was an extreme case.

For 50 dollars corbonite beats every backup tool online since carbonite offers unlimited disk space.

no hard disk which can fail, break or get stolen nor 2 gb free can make up for that attraction if you are looking for it. but carbonite as being just a back up tool cannot provide the same collaboration feature.

I have 10 GB with DB and I must say it works well. once a project is finished it gets onto a CD since this medium is still very reliable and resistant to any crashes.

But anyway - important document should ALWAYS be backed up 2 times.

Say that again. Bought 250 gig usb drive and my mac went on sleep mode and somehow erased the file structure of the drive. Thank god for ‘recuva’.

LOL we did that and many other things. The file format was so much shot to un-usability it is not funny anymore. And it also was a USB drive.

Recuva is a good pogramm in your opinion?

Wait, is this basically the same as Ubuntu One? Where it syncs a folder among all your computers, and to the server, in a cloud?

It’s fast and recovers the erased files and it’s free. It’s very good.

Tynach yes i think so.

Well it’s not like it’s at a lot of risk for viruses and errors because the only time it’s turned on is when I do the actual backing up.
