Dubai: rival to Vegas and New York?

http://www.pbase.com/bmcmorrow/dubaiprojects

I look at these projects and holy crud they’re not only huge there’s several of them :o

Looks like it’ll be one of those cities where everything you could ever want in a tourist town will be all in one place and break records at the same time :o

I hope whoever runs Las Vegas’s tourism industry is seeing this :o

And there’s more then this, there’s the Hotel shaped like a Sail, cutting edge Wild wadi water park with features similar to Shlitterbahn, the planned underwater hotel, and the largest shopping mall with giant aquarium and indoor ski resort. :o

I am aware of most of these, as our company supplies a lot of product for these projects.

Though I do have to say that this is geared towards the European market and tourists and not so much the North American tourist. Just based on the fact that it is very expensive to fly from North America to Dubai, (currently $8,500 CDN. round trip).

So I don’t think anyone in North America is really going to be hurt by this.

Would easily be able to blow Walt Disney World and Orlando out of the water.

I think when all these projects are completed this would be a fun place to go to. But for now we may have to settle with Vegas, though they have their projects, but not like this. Orlando also has big projects, but still not like this magnitude.

The UAE has got to be one of the most wasteful and vainest places on Earth. These projects are nice feats of engineering and all, but just think about how many billions are spent on these things. That indoor ski resort has got to be one of the most ridiculous things ever built. Go to a bloody mountain if you want to ski.%| In any case, it’ll be interesting to see what happens when they run out of oil…

It’s in the desert the nearest ski resort would be like 1000 miles away. It’s not like here in the US where there’s resorts all over the Rocky Mountains.

Why do you think these projects are a waste of money?

Take a look inside, it is just ridiculous:

I’m at a total loss for words… :o :o :o :o :o

No way Vagas and Orlando can outdo that.
:o

See you in Dubai

Just as a note, from reading various stuff on Dubailand and other projects, it seems that only something like 8% of Dubai’s GDP is based on oil. The prince actually said that a major reason for projects like this is to totally wean themselves off of oil, replacing the income with tourism. It sounds like a pretty good plan to me.

Dubaiworld is huge in scope, but it sounds like most of the money was fronted by local business people and portions of it are already done, with the first phase finishing by start of 2008 (not sure exactly what’s in phase 1). It isn’t like they’re the first to do stuff like indoor ski resorts. I believe Japan has had some of those for a while now, and as someone else said, Dubai probably has even more justification with it being a desert. It’s all just on the biggest scale of anyone so far.

But yeah… they do have tons and tons of projects going in various locales of Dubai it seems. Hopefully they’ll be able to support all of them. If you want to talk about crazy projects, forget a bunch of skyscrapers. These are the guys that are building a series of islands in the shape of the world continents:

Here’s the projects of Vegas in comparison. A lot less and some were canceled.

Here’s one place that seems to rival Dubai in skyscraper projects. And I don’t think this includes Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and all the other towns just north of it.

No place to put a Dubailand type project unless they buldoze the everglades which is protected, but Orlando has that and isn’t too far.

EDIT: placed the link on the first page. You should read the whole thing, over 400 projects :o

Looks like they’ll be world leaders in everything from healthcare to Industry to taking the Golf trophy away from Myrtle Beach. :o

As far as I know tourism wise every city’s title is doomed, Dubai will take them all. Same with all other titles. And every record so Guiness will have to make a new section so it won’t all be

Dubai, Dubai, Dubai, Dubai, Dubai on most of the pages.

If you want your city to hold a record, might as well face it, once you complete it Dubai will break it.

I stand corrected ;).

Icoxo: you can use the edit function instead of posting 3 times in a row :P.

If the thread is already mostly down the page no one will really notice what I have to say, plus it’s been well over a day.

Yawn. Sorry to break it to you guys, but Australia has got all that and is 100 times than Dubai. Oz is the real thing. Besides who wants to go to Dubai, women are not allowed to vote and people wear rags on their heads.
