Duplicates

Hi,

i want to have multiple similar objects. So i modelled one object and duplicated it with Shift-D. however i don’t get the behaviour i wanted - as soon as i switch to another frame, all objects loose all their rotation and lcoation information and all come back together on the same spot. I have tried adding keyframes to them without success and i also made sure they didnt have any keyframes brining them somewhere else.

what am i doing wrong, or how can i truly duplicate objects so that they are fully independent?

thanks

Well that is how to duplicate them. You can also use Alt-shift-D which is supposed to work better for the game engine.

What mode are you in when you duplicate the objects? It sounds like perhaps you are playing with them in poser and then going back to edit mode, where they will show in there original positions.

Perhaps more information, or the .blend?

I am not doing anything special with the poser, in fact it’s a very simple mesh, almost a cube, and i’m doing it in object mode. I’m just trying to move it around.

Actually i found out that it works as long as i dont add keyframes to the duplicated objects. from that moment on, they all rush back to the lcoation of the original object.

If this information is not sufficient, please tell me and i will post a demo .blend file

if this can help i have a sample file here.

Just Shift-D copy the object in object mode. Then add a loc-rot key frame to each of them. Switch to frame 2. And it’s gone!

(PS dont make fun of my ugly models :stuck_out_tongue: just pretend its because tetxures are missing )

I didn’t download the file, but I’m guessing you have a keyframe on frame 2. Check your IPO editor.

no, there is not. IPo editor is totally empty

and as i said, changing frame works before i add a keyframe to the objects. if i had a keyframe on frame 2, it would not behave this way (it would also change when i dont add keyframes on frame 1)

If you want to copy the IPO when you duplicate I think you need to choose that option in the preference panel view.

The one at the top of the default screen? Pull it down and click the Edit Methods button. Then look to the far right and you will see that you can click the ipo button.

I’m downloading the file to check out what you mean. I have to leave though, so hopefully someone else with have the right answer for you. I’m a noob, but i still try to help.

No i’m not trying to copy the IPO, i just want to have 2 seperate objects. However blender acts like it doesnt consider them as 2 seperte objects and refuses that the 2 are animated differently

as soon as i try to animate duplicate objects independently of each other, blender keeps pulling them back together

Ok, and you did duplicate them while you were in object mode? If in edit mode then they are one object, with two meshes.

You do have an Active IPO on the object in the file: ObIpo.005. Although you don’t have Keyframes, when you duplicate an object and IPO window’s Link Box has an IPO in it, that IPO is Active and will be duplicated with the Object and you’ll see (in the Link Box) that each time you duplicate the User Number increases. To avoid this click the X to unlink it then duplicate.

The duplicates are not disappearing, they are moving to the exact location of the original object, where ObIpo.005 tells them to go.

Im back and tried to use the zip, but there was something wrong with the file.

I did a test, created a cube, then in object mode I duplicated it. Then I selected one and pressed I to insert a keyframe. Then selected the other cube and did the same.

Then moved to the second frame and saw both curves just fine. I then moved each one and did I to set it again.

Everything was fine. So I just dont know what to say without the .blend

Can you just upload the .blend without zipping it?

The only time I saw a blank was by selecting both cubes and hitting I, then clicked on the first cube I selected and it didnt have the curve.

Sorry, looks like we were typing at the same time, and he has the answer, great.

many thanks! i learned something today :o
