Duplicating a Group, and other questions.

I have some basic Blender questions.

1. How do I duplicate a group?

  • I’ve created several ‘things’ that are groups of objects all linked together as a well group. How do I duplicate that group without having to manually duplicate all the individual objects in that group? How do I group with linking? So that If i change one group they all change? I know how to do this with objects, just not with groups.

2. What if I want to import an entire group from another .blend? I don’t see that option, am I blind?

3. How do I make something glow?

  • Lets say I want to make part of a texture that is set to emit to glow and have a halo around it, how do I go about that?

4. Render only certain objects?

  • I plan on rendering a scene in two parts, then compositing those with other elements in After Effects. Foreground and background. Is there a simple way to render some objects set as ‘foreground’ and then render out the ‘background’? Does this make sense?

5. Set up something so it always animates?

  • This may be a bigger question. Lets say I’ve rendered a helicopter. Is there a simple way that the helicopters blades always rotate. Or have lights that blink in a repeating sequence, etc. As I said, this may be a bigger question that may require me to learn more animation first.

6. Is there a good tutorial for creating an afterburner effect?

  • I’ve looked, they all seem like old tutorials. The biggest issue with blender on the internet seems to be all the old tutorials that don’t help us newbs that much with the new interface. For this should I just play with particles and smoke?

7. My UV is all tilted and not square and stuff?
-I saw a tutorial(which I then lost) that showed how you square up one face of a UV, then “mage wand clickies” the rest of the grid of the UV squared up to that face. How do I do this? Was I just dreaming?

8. Is there a good tutorial or resource outlining material settings?
-Metal should have X hardness and Y luminosity…etc? Anything like that out there, or should I just import premade materials?

Thanks all, I will probably add more questions later.

I’m slowly making a spaceship, and corridors and stuff. I know, how original.

Yikes! It’s a complete forum in a single post!

hm…
#1, #2 probably belongs here (as its own post).
#3, #4, #6, #7, #8 goes in texturing or rendering (as their own posts)
#5 goes in animation

My suggestion is you space these questions out a bit, maybe a post or two every day. I also suggest you spend more time searching around before you ask the community to devote such a large amount of time on your behalf. (I know you’ve already spent time, but you might want to spend a little more, especially with such a list.) There’s a LOT on the internet on how to make something glow, for instance (hint: emit + indirect lighting).

I’ll take #2: Press Shift+F1, which allows you to append items from other blends. When you click on the blend you want, you get a list of sub-categories within the blend, one of which is “group.” Find the group you’re interested in and everything in that group will appear in your current blend file (it’s a great way to move specific items around).

I hope I’m not coming across as cruel here, but this post feels a bit excessive to me…

you have to do more “search” on your own,

i did this for the following words:
search in the forum for: “duplicate group”
here are 2 links about duplicating objects (other are about materials, nodes …)
> http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=124970&highlight=duplicate+group

a search about the single word: glow
gives…
> http://blenderartists.org/forum/search.php?searchid=180498
starting with simple ones incl. example-blends like this
> http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=169895&highlight=glow
up to such things like the “lightsaber starwars-like weapon” or neon-promotion-lightnings.

and for the rest of the questions, … you may use your own search-words?
