duplicating objects

i duplicated an object and i assigned a new material to the new object but the previos object go the new material too!

how can i remove the link between them?

If they are linked objects select one and press U in object mode.
If they are just duplicates with the same material, select one and delete the material from it and add another one or press the number to the right of the material name to make it a single user.
